How do I generate invoices for subscription customers?

Introduction

Subscription orders are processed through Shopify — just like regular orders — which means invoice and order confirmation emails are automatically generated by Shopify each time a subscription order is placed.

There’s no need to manually create invoices for subscriptions unless a customer requests a custom version.

1. How subscription invoices work

Each time a subscription order is processed:

  • Shopify creates a standard order confirmation email
  • This email includes:
    • Order number
    • Items and quantities
    • Delivery and billing addresses
    • Total amount charged
    • Payment method summary

👉 This email acts as the official invoice and is sent automatically to the customer.

2. Where to find the invoice (customer view)

Customers can view their invoice by:

  • Opening the order confirmation email (sent after every billing cycle)
  • Logging into their account → viewing Order History
  • Clicking on any order → viewing order details and print-friendly invoice
