Introduction
Whether a customer wants to switch to a higher-tier plan, change delivery frequency, or downgrade to a smaller subscription, you can handle all changes directly from your admin — or guide them to self-manage via their account.
This guide covers how to manage upgrades, downgrades, and other plan adjustments.
What counts as a plan change?
A plan change may include:
- ✅ Switching products within a subscription
- ✅ Changing frequency (e.g. every 2 weeks → every 4 weeks)
- ✅ Adjusting quantities (more or fewer items per delivery)
- ✅ Moving between prepaid and recurring plans
- ✅ Upgrading or downgrading price tiers or product bundles
Option 1: Customers manage changes themselves
If your store has the Manage Subscriptions widget on the account page, customers can:
- Change delivery frequency
- Update quantities
- Cancel current plan and subscribe to a new one
👉 For switching between different products or prepaid/recurring models, customers will need to cancel and re-subscribe.
Option 2: You make changes in the admin
To change a subscription manually:
- Go to Roadmap Admin → Subscriptions → Manage Subscriptions.
- Search for the customer and open their active subscription.
- Use the available tools to:
- Edit frequency
- Add/remove products
- Adjust quantity
- Reschedule next delivery
- Cancel the current subscription and create a new one (if switching plan type)
👉 Roadmap doesn’t “move” customers between plans — instead, you update the subscription or cancel & re-create as needed.
How to upgrade or downgrade a subscription
Upgrade example:
- Customer currently gets a single bottle monthly
- They want a 3-pack every month (better value)
Steps:
- Edit the subscription
- Increase product quantity or swap in the bundle
- Save changes — the next billing reflects the upgrade
Downgrade example:
- Customer wants fewer items or less frequent delivery
- Edit frequency or reduce quantity
- Save and confirm changes
For switching prepaid vs. recurring plans
These are treated as separate plan types in Roadmap.
To switch:
- Cancel the customer’s current subscription
- Create a new subscription (manually or by guiding the customer)
- Choose the correct plan type
- Set start date and preferences
👉 The customer will be charged based on the new plan’s settings going forward.
FAQs
Can I offer a “change plan” button to customers?
Not currently — customers will need to cancel and re-subscribe, or contact you to make the switch manually.
Will the customer lose their subscription history?
No — past subscription activity is still visible in the customer profile, even after a plan switch.
Can changes apply mid-cycle?
Yes — changes take effect on the next scheduled billing unless you trigger a manual order.
Summary
To handle subscription changes:
- ✅ Use your admin to edit frequency, quantity, or products
- ✅ Cancel and recreate the subscription for prepaid/recurring switches
- ✅ Let customers self-manage basic changes from their account
This gives customers flexibility while keeping your plans organized.
