How do I fix delayed or missing tag updates?

Introduction

Roadmap’s Tag Library applies logic rules in real time — there’s no need for manual tagging or Shopify Flow automations. If it looks like updates are delayed or missing, it usually means the rule conditions aren’t being met, another rule is overriding it, or you’re looking in the wrong place (e.g. storefront instead of Analytics).

Here’s how to troubleshoot.

1. Confirm the Rule Conditions

  • Rules only apply when conditions are met.
  • Examples:
    • A “VIP” rule won’t apply until the customer crosses the spend threshold.
    • A “Reviewers” rule won’t apply until a review is submitted.
    • A “UK Customers” rule won’t apply if the test customer is set to the US.

👉 Fix: Double-check the customer, product, or order you’re testing with.

2. Check Active Dates and Fallback

  • If a rule has a future start date, it won’t apply until then.
  • If an end date has passed, the fallback state (Visible or Hidden) takes over.
  • Example: A product drop may seem “missing” because the rule expired and fallback = Hidden.

👉 Fix: Review your scheduling settings.

3. Look for Overlapping Rules

  • If two rules apply to the same product/collection/page, the more specific rule takes priority.
  • Example:
    • Rule 1: All logged-in customers can see Collection A.
    • Rule 2: Only VIPs can see Product X inside Collection A.
    • Result: Product X stays hidden from regular customers.

👉 Fix: Simplify conditions or adjust rule priority.

4. Verify App Block Placement

  • If the rule controls a widget (e.g. bundle, review, loyalty) and it’s missing, confirm the Roadmap app block is placed in the Shopify theme editor.
  • Rules only control visibility — the block must exist for it to show.

👉 Fix: Add or move the app block in your theme.

5. Check Analytics for Confirmation

  • Some rules won’t have a visual storefront effect but still apply in the background.
  • Every rule becomes a filter in Roadmap Analytics, where you can see attributed revenue, orders, and activity.

👉 Fix: Open Analytics → Filters and confirm your rule is being tracked.

6. Consider Browser Caching or Session State

  • Logged-in rules may not apply immediately if you’re testing with cached sessions.
  • Example: A test account might need to log out and log back in for changes to take effect.

👉 Fix: Test in an incognito/private window with a fresh login.

Common Questions

  • Are rules applied in real time?
    • Yes — as soon as a customer/product/order meets the condition, the rule applies instantly.
  • Do rules apply retroactively?
    • Yes — rules evaluate all existing customers, products, and orders that meet the condition.
  • Why don’t I see tags in Shopify?
    • Because Roadmap doesn’t use Shopify tags. Rules are logic-based and tracked inside Roadmap.
  • What if nothing works?
    • Contact Roadmap Support — we can review your rules and help troubleshoot.

Summary

If Tag Library updates look delayed or missing, check your rule conditions, dates/fallback, overlapping rules, app block placement, and Analytics filters. Rules apply in real time, but you may need to test with the right customer profile or confirm results in Analytics instead of on the storefront.
